Beginners Mosaic Pot Project

Today, we are featuring one of our customer's beautiful mosaic garden pot projects by Jill Gallo. Jill has generously shared her creation with us to inspire others to try their hand at mosaic art. This project is perfect for beginners.

Products Used

1 x 25cm terracotta pot
Tools
- Small mixing bowl
- Plastic (or similar) knife to mix and apply glue
- Fine spatula to tidy around pieces as you work
- Ceramic scissors
Cement based adhesive & grout additive
Ceramic tiles

Start with pot any size. I used 25 cm.

2. Have a basic idea of what you want to achieve. My inspo for this was a ‘crazy paving’ look in mostly pastels.

3. I also decided at the start to leave the top rim plain as a point of difference.

4. Start to lay out tiles and when happy apply glue and fix to pot. I stated with the blue squares at the top as a border and added some patches of the hexagon shapes then built up the jigsaw pieces around those. I did cut a few pieces to fill in areas where the gaps were too big but found the precut jigsaw pieces incredibly easy to use and fit together.

5. I use a small plastic bowl to mix up cement based adhesive and with a plastic knife, paddle pop stick or similar apply a small amount of glue to the back of your tile and place on pot leaving some room for grout in between. I then use the fine spatula to clean up in between as I go.

6. I think it makes a huge difference if you can set tiles at the same height as you place them so that when you grout you don’t have pieces sitting ‘above’ others. It can be tricky on a curved surface but with practice becomes second nature.

When complete leave for a few days to allow adhesive to completely dry.

Grout in colour if your choice. I used a light grey colouring as I find it usually compliments most things.

Pot up with a plant of your choice and enjoy.
