Create Your Own Mosaic Easter Eggs

How to make mosaic easter eggs

Why not try making a Mosaic Easter Egg? Easter is just around the corner, so it's the perfect time to do this project. They make fabulous gifts, a great alternative to the chocolate kind!

Mosaic Eggs are a fantastic project; they are quick to make, inexpensive, and unique. They make beautiful paperweights or decorative pieces that will be enjoyed by anyone that receives them. You can even get a group of people together and have a mosaic-making party!

They are fantastic projects for beginners and experienced mosaicists.

MATERIALS

  • Mosaic Egg - plaster free-standing eggs or polystyrene eggs (available from craft stores)
  • Adhesive - Clear liquid nails
  • Black Grout
  • Tweezers
  • Gloves, containers, rags or a sponge for grouting
  • Tiles - Small tiles are best for making eggs

STEPS

1. Choose your materials

Your imagination only limits the choice of materials; for this project, smaller-sized tiles and embellishments work best. Choosing a theme or colour scheme will give you some direction with your design before proceeding.

2. Adhering your tiles & materials

Having a concept in mind is always a great idea before you start. The design may be a colour theme, geometric shapes, swirls or flowers.

A tacky adhesive (e.g., cement-based adhesive or liquid nails) will hold your tiles and materials while the adhesive dries. A liquid adhesive like Weldbond will make it harder for your pieces to stay in place while it dries (particularly on curved areas). You can rest your piece on a cloth to support your work as you work.

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to dry before grouting.

3. Grouting

When grouting, always wear gloves, as the grout will dry your hands out.

Mix your powdered grout in a container with water to a paste-like consistency. Once mixed, place a small amount of grout onto your tiles and rub it into the gaps between them. Once you have covered the entire mosaic, wipe off the excess with a wet cloth. Wait 20-30 minutes and buff the excess grout (once a grout haze develops). Ensure you dig out all the tiles and embellishments. Leave it for 24 hours, then give it a final buff-up to remove excess grout.
