How To Make A Mosaic Rock

w to make a mosaic rock

Last week I posted a beautiful mosaic made by Mary Foley on our Facebook page. It proved to be so popular that the technique is the topic of this week's How to Mosaic. You can create fantastic rock garden art using this technique which can include dragonflies, butterflies, frogs, geckos and snails just to name a few.

Materials: A selection of Coloured Iridised Glass Tiles, Ceramic Charms and Glass Droplets. The outter rim of the heart is created using Ball Chain.

TECHNIQUE

Step 1

Draw the design on a rock. Ensure that the rock is clean and free of debris.

Step 2

Seal / prime the surface before applying the adhesive. Sealing the surface is particularly important where the rock is porous to stop the grout from drying out, while also assisting the adhesive to adhere to the rock better. I use a 'grout additive' for this as the sealer. Using a waterproof cement based adhesive create a bed of adhesive for the tiles to be laid in. The outside rim of the heart has been defined with Ball Chain and was laid first to define the shape.

Prior to grouting the rock cover the areas around the mosaic with masking tape to protect it.

Step 3

Grout the rock. Adding a grout additive to the grout will help improve its flexibility and help stop the grout from cracking.
